TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL.

The general meeting of the East Coast Trades and Labor Council was held m the. Trades Hall on Saturday evening, there being a good attendance of dele-' gates. In the absence of the President. Mr A. H. Anderson presided. A consid erable amount of, outward and inward correspondence was read, approved and received. Amongst the inward corres-. pondence was a letter from the Minister of Labor, approving of Labor Day being observed m Gisborne on Thursday, November 16th, also from Sir Jas. Carroll, wishing success to the Labor Day demonstrations, and enclosing a cheque for £3 3s to the prize fund. The Waterside Workers' Union also forwarded a cheque for £3 3s to the prize fund, other unions promising to do their, best m a like manner. Delegates reported that troph ies \vere being liberally donated by tha business people of Gisborne. The secretary (Mr D. W Coleman) reported that the conference between the Trades Council, Employers' Federation, and the Retai|ers' Association, had amicably agreed to observe Thursday, November 16th, as Labor Day, and everything pointed to a successful demonstration. A deal of routine and very interesting business was transacted, amongst which was an interesting discussion regarding the proposal of the Totara Timber Company for the right to construct a pri-vately-owned railway m the King Coun-try.-_The delegates strongly condemned the. principle and the secretary was instructed to forward . this , resolution : That this Council strongly protest.' against any'privately oWihed railways being constructed m the Dominion.
