(Press Assn.— By Telegraph.— Copyright.) . (Received October 13, 8.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, October 13. In the House of Representatives. Mr Johnson declared that when the independent cable service was started members were led to believe that 300 newspapers were prepared to take the cables. They now found that under a dozen were taking them, after over £2000 had been spent iu subsidies. : The Government would do well to look at some of tlie scare headlines published in connection with the new service; As a financial transaction they were concerned in what they were subsidising, and the' Government should not be a party to misrepresentation of facts. Mr Fisher declared that he could prove that the public had gained more than they had given up. He indicated that the Government miglit increase • the turnover on which the subsidy was payable, but would not increase the annual amount.
