Mr Johnson declared that when the independent cable service was started members were led to believe that 300 newspapers were prepared to take the cables. They now found that under a dozen were taking them, after over £2000 had been spent iu subsidies. : The Government would do well to look at some of tlie scare headlines published in connection with the new service; As a financial transaction they were concerned in what they were subsidising, and the' Government should not be a party to misrepresentation of facts. Mr Fisher declared that he could prove that the public had gained more than they had given up. He indicated that the Government miglit increase • the turnover on which the subsidy was payable, but would not increase the annual amount.
