East Cape experienced a heavy gale and rain in the night. Weather coiidi'tlarik generally were unsettled this morning, strong westerly and north-westerly winds prevailing nt most stations. There was a heavy gale at Hokianga, with rain, a gale nt New Plymouth, with rain, and squally weather at several other stations. Rain was also falling at Cope Maria, Kawhia, Greymouth, and passing showers nt East Cape. Wellington reported a. rninfall " of 0.31 inches in the night, and Westport rain in the night. STATE OF THE SEA. East Cape reported a very henvy sen this morning, Cape Maria, moderate, Russell rough, Tiritiri a moderate' swell, Taurangn considerable, Gisborne Binooth, .Napier moderate. Cape Palliser and Cape Campbell moderate, Timaru moderate Bluff smooth, Hokinnga and Manukau Heads rough, New Plymouth rough, Westport considerable, Greymouth rough. WEATHER FORECAST. A westerly Rtornr area has" developed, and rain has fallen in many parts of the country. High, northerly winds have prevailed, and the barometer has fallen everywhere. Present indications are for rain and cloudy weather ?;enerally, with a further fall in the barometer n most parts of the country. But a temporary rise is anticipated shortly in the south High northerly and westerly winds will probably predominate, but a change to the southward for a short time may be looked* for soon. ■ * To-day's forecast states: "Westerly strong to gale, veering; expect unsettled and cloudy weather; rain probable, and there are indications for cold change after 24 hours ; tides good ; sea rough on the coast."
