AUCKLAND, this a a y . :A, torrential downpour of. rain this morning flooded Queen street, the water flowing .over the kerbs up to the building line m many places.. Many cellars were flooded, some as much as 4ft. deep. A good deal of damage was done to goods below the street level m various shops. Nearly all the hotels and restaurants m the lower part of the city suffered severely. In numerous instances the fires were extinguished. The cooks worked knee-deep m water m various places, including half-a-dozen leading hotels, m preparing the midday meal. The downpour lasted about an hour, and was followed by a steady drizzle.
