MINISTERIAL VISIT.
HON. R. McKENZIE LEAVES FOR
TOKOMARU BAY
The Hon. R. McKenzie, Minister foi Public Works, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr MeAlister, reached town by Saturday evening's train. The Minister was received by the Mayor (Mr W. D. Lysnar) and the Hon. Capt. Tuckter (Chairman of the Cook County Council), and was driven to the Masonic Hotel. Mr W. D. S. Mac Donald, M.P., left the party at Puha to stop over the night at home, whilst Mr R. W. Holmes (Engineer-in-Chief) and Mr C. E. Arm i strong^ (resident engineer) regained at Otoko. The Minister spent the day m town yesterday, and had a busy morning today, there being a large accumulation of departmental business. Af.ter receiving a deputation from the East, Coast Railway League, the Hon. Mr McKenzie left for the coast at noon. The party proceeded by motor-car to the Mayor's residence at Waimona. After lunching there the Minister resumed his journey to Tokomaru m one of Messrs Redstone and Sons' vehicles. At Tolaga Bay this evening a deputation is expected to wait upon the hon. gentleman regarding the opening up of land for settlement m. the district. Mr McKenzie returns to Gisborne by Wednesday afternoon's steamer from Auckland. He will be entertained that evening by the Chamber of Commerce, at their annual dinner. The Minister continues his journey overland to Napier on Thursday morning. He to motor to the head of Jbhe Arai valley and ride over the watershed, and through to Wairoa along the route of the Mangapoike line, now being surveyed by the Department. He expects t to reach 'Wairoa on Thursday night. HANGARO'A ROADS. At the conclusion of the railway deputation this morning (reported elsewhere). Mr J. Barnes Graham, of Hangaroa, a mpraber of the deputation, explained that the settlers were proposing to raise a loan to complete the Hangafoa road to do away with, the Parakanapa toad. The Minister : It wants doing away with. ' Mr Barnes Graham explained that the work would cost about £9000. The Minister said he would have a report made to poo if the road was practicable, and what it would cost. It was impossible to make a. good road on - the other route. The deputation also asked that assistance should be given for widening the- Hanguroa-Waikaremoana road.
