Members stated that there was no systematic attempt to push the sale of briquettes and eggettes, and the Government Department was using Newcastle instead of coal from their own mines, and the ultimate effect would be a considerable loss of mining population to New Zealand. It was decided to ask the Miners' Union to support the protest, and if no satisfaction is forthcoming, to hold a public meeting on the question. 'DUNEDIN, this day. The Congregational Union Conference continued yesterday. Ira the matter of the report of the Pastors' Provident Fund Board on the suggested alteration of rules, it was intimated that Mr W. H. Lyon and Mr Fowlds were unable to attend. It was* resolved to communicate with Mr Lyon, informing him that the Council' would deal with rule 5, but would defer consideration until next conference. The proposed alteration of rule 5, if put into effect, would admit of the board receiving: all ministers at present working m New Congregational Churches as beneficiary members, but would not open the door to aged ministers subsequently arriving m the Dominion. An interesting paper on the -function of the church was read by the Rev. i; Sarginson. The discussion of an amalgamation question was resumed, and eventually the matter was made a remit for consideration at the next meeting. In the evening a young people's service was held.
