Mr W. D. S. MacDonald, M.P., accompanied by Mr R. B. Ross, M.P. for Pahiatua, and Mr T. Quirk, also of Pahiatua, leave by the morning train for Motu and the Bay of Plenty. Mr MacDonald then proceeds to Rotorua. In the report of the Borough Council meeting, Cr Clayton was made to say that ho estimated it would require £175,000 additional to complete the loan works. The amount should have appeared as £75,000, which Cr Clayton said he would consider as a low estimate. Inspector Dwyer. officer in charge of the Gisborne and Hawke's Bay districts, returned this afternoon from an inspection of the coastal stations. He visits To Karaka this evening, and returns South on Sunday. Questioned regarding the new gaol, now nearing completion, he stated that the present premises, the original portion of which have been erected about 40 years, will probably be demolished to make room for more adequate station buildings for the local force. All persons arrested will be confined at the new institution. Provision, he thought, might be made for detaining short-sentence prisoners (up to three months) at the new" gaol, but this had so far not been decided. With ibe closing down of the Napier gaol. Gisborne long-sentence prisoners would go to Wellington or the new central gaol along the Main Trunk line.
