THE WARATAH INQUIRY.
♦ LONDON, February 3. At the Board of Trade inquiry into the loss of the Waratah, Mr Bucknill, one of the counsel engaged in the case, reviewed the evidence. He pointed out that there was a great conflict of opinion as to the meaning of the letters which had passed between the owners and builders, and said it was strange that Mr Lund should now declare that the complaints regarding the vessel were exaggerated. Counsel submitted that Captain Ilbery, anxious to make a good voyage, took the risk of putting coal on the spar deck', hoping that he would not encounter a storm. As it turned out the ship was overtaken by heavy weather, and must have capsized and foundered.
