AUSTRALIA'S PERIL.
MR FISHER'S VIEW.
September 30. Discussing the cable m which the prospects of a renewal ,of the Anglo-Japanese alliance were discussed, and m which the opinion was expressed that Japan hod her eyes on Australia, Mr Fisher said that tbe subject had not escaped his attention. He was hot) prepared to discuss the policy involved, but personally he would not be sorry to see the treaty extended. "Ten years' freedom from the fear of trouble m Eastern waters," he remarked, "would/ be invaluable to- the Comjaonwealth, provided they were not spent m indolence, but m active, intellvgenfc preparation on the lines laid down m the Government's defence scheme." The Prime Minister's desire will doubtless be noted by Japan.
