TOBACCONISTS AND CHINESE.

WELLINGTON, this day
A deputation cpnsisting of Messrs J. B. Speed (president of the Wellington and New Zealand Tobacconists' Associations), R. W. Armit (Wellington Association executive), and H. F. Allen (secretary to both bodies), waited on the Chineso Consul, Mr Hwang, and laid before him a copy of the proposed tariff of the ' Association, with a view to arriving at an amicable understanding m rejiard to Ihe control of the tobacco trade. The Consul listened to the deputation's riewß, and discussed,. the matter with it. Mr Hwang intimated that as far as lay m his power he would assist the Association; Tho Chinese traders had already held a meeting, and discussed the matter, and they were quite m accord with the Association. He would call another meeting of the traders, and lay a copy of the proposed tariff before them. Mr Hwang explained that m some districts m China there existed what was proposed by the deputation. Councils were elected by the tradespeople, and these regulated the prices, so that it was impossible for one trader to undersell another.
