WELLINGTON, this day. The annual Trotting Chlb's Conferenc opened here to-day, M.v J. Rowe presiding. In his address, the president refer red to the operations of the Race Meetings Act to regulate meetings of nontotalisator d"bs, which had had thr effect of clearing the world of sport m New 7eotand of tho vndcsirabla proprietary atmosphere. The work done by the Association had hot been without >rood results. As each year went by there was ji greater absence of protests or appeals against decisions of clubs, whilst -the good . control and regulation of sport was almost all that could he e'esirsd. Regarding the question of appointing stipendiary stewards the president «tid that the more one sa>v of country meetings the more ap parent did the need .of paid stewards become. Since the licensing of bookmakers the Mate of affairs had not im-i proved, and it was m this direction the appointment ■ f i-t-lpoiwliwrv stewards would b« mo; ( ' pneficial.
