(Received July 19, 1Q.40 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 19. The correct list of killed reduces the number to nine. Mr C. R. Smith, previously included, is safe. The name Haughcr should be Hawgler. Tho latest return makes the n Umber of wounded 110, but the majority : are only slight injuries or shock. Tho work of rescue vwv? difficult and dangerous. . The lack: o f proper tools impeded the work greatly, and crowds got round and battered the carriages, which caused much confusion, Despite the best efforts of large bands who got to work as soon as was humanly possible* some of the injured had to b 6 left pinned m the debris for a long time. Their sufferings and cries of pain were terrible. Meanwhile good Samaritans, 1 many of them with their own faces bruised and bleeding, wero holding cups and glasses of water or stimulants to the lips of those accessible among the wreckage. Numerous stories are told of remarkAble escapes of 'those- who travelled m the colliding trains. . Last night about twenty-six injured remained m. the hospitals. The most serious cases are 'broken limbs, injured spines, ttnd bad cases, of concussion. The majority are progressing satisfactorily. Evidence as to the actual factors lead-
ing to the smash is conflicting. The signalman at the Richmond station declares that • the* signal was against the Elsternwick train.
