GAMBLING ON RACES.
(Special to Herald.) DUXEDIX, this day. In the "opinion of a resident of this pity, versed m Parliamentary practice and procedure, the first of 4 ho Prime Minister's resolutions, that dealing with the repeal of the licensing of bookmakers section m the- 1907 Act, will command the support of a very large majority of members of tho House j m other words tfie licensed bookmakers will become extinct. The second resolution, which aims at tho prohibition of the totnlisator, will he negatived on a vote. Tho remaining resolution, that which curtals the number of days' racing will bo carried, but the proposed reduction of permits (one- half) may be found to be too sweeping, and probably the curv, tailment by one-third will be thought to bo sufficiently drastic to minimise tho present evil. Local opinion further favors .the idea that thp Racing Confcrenco (meeting at Wellington on Thursday next) will deal with the matter. In flny case a pronouncement on tho question of bookmaker versus totalizator by Sir George Clifford, m his Presidential address, may be looked for.
