WAIKOHU COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the Waikohu Count v Council meeting hold yesterday at Te Karaka, Mr W. B. Orr, Motn, wrote asking if it was necessary for him to take out a slaughterhouse license for (ho Waikohu County, as well as for the Opo-. tiki County. Upon looking up the Act, which: defines Hint it is not necessary to get »■■ license for each county, unless business is extended into an abattoir district, it was derided to reply to that effect, although Councillors expressed the opinion that it seemed hardly fair for'- the Opotiki County 'to get the slaughtering fee, and yet a butcher could extend his business to the Waikohu County. A letter wns received from three Karaka settlers, Messrs Percy J. Brewster, L. Johnston, and Mrs J. Morris, asking that a road be drained m their vicinity. — After some dis-; mission as to the difficulty of ticking a drain through the property of a number of settlers,; tho matter was held over. No tenders were received for Fraser road,, and as mi error had occurred m connection^ wifch the calling of tenders for Armstrong road it was decided to invite fresh tenders.: The report of the Engineer (Mr J. ( Mouat) was read, and various works rccom'inended' were authorised, including the building of Wheoa bridge, to cost £300, and the Scott's bridge work to be gone on with. The En-: gineer reported that the construction of Manuel's bridge was completed, with the tip proaches yet to be done, and that McGregor's bridge was under construction. As to Karaka drain levels, the Engineer reported that the field work was done, and he suggested the widening of a number of culverts, which had been blocked through not being large enough. — It was decided to go on with the' work, and to apply to the Resident Engineer for his Department to bear cost of culverts on the road to the Railway Station, which road had not been taken over by the Council?' As to Whatatutu deviation the Engineer reported that m company with Crs. Palmer and Campbell an inspection of the two possible road lines was made. The first starts at ; the school, and turning to the left runs m a direct line to the Mangatu bridge, and this was the route that must eventually be taken, notwithstanding that it leads traffic away from Whatatutu deviation. Estimated cost £1120. The second route, starting from the bridge, proceeds along the flat ground at the back of the MabTi pa and adjacent to the foot, oi ihe large terrace, and proceeds to the terrace on which Whatatntu stands. Estimated cost £710. This road line might be washed away at some future date, and the Engineer recommended the former scheme, which received the most favorable consideration m the discussion which followed, although one Councillor considered it would not do to take the road half a .mile away from the township' and the hotel.— Cr. • rainier: I think; tfcat >i Mahomet wont to go to the mountain, the mountain will go to Mahomet m this case. (Laughter.)— After a good deal of discussion it was decided to call a meeting, when Councillors would explain the position to the settlers, and get their opinion.; and to also write to Messrs Blair and Sainsbury re Mr Brodrick's offer of land, asking for particulars of same.

Mr H. C. Jackson waited on tha .Council regarding the laying down of the prppoypd Wailioru tramway on the County roads, and' stated that the only differences that arose wore m regard to maintenance -of a portion of the road, and the sheathing of Kanakania bridge. Mr Jackson offered to supply timber for decking the bridge at 6s.— A- long "'discussion ensued on the matter being Again draught up later, and it was eventually decided to write to Mr Hall stating that the -Council had decided to keep to the Engineer's original recommendations, and that he must pay half the cost of the Waitere bridge, and must also deck the Kauakania bridge whilst the mill was working, and pay the maintenance for 12 months of road formation. The Council then went into committee to discuss Pattullo's bridge 1 , when it v.i« 'decided to go on with the work. It was resolved, m compliance with the resolution passed at the lust meeting, thai a general rate of ljd. m the £ be made t.ion the -capital value of all rateable propi rr.y within the several ridings of the County, namely, Knrnka, Kanakania, Motu, Mangnti, Ngatapa, and Waipaoa riding, for' the year Ist April, 1910, to 31st March, 1911; this special order to be submitted for confirmation at the next ordinary meeting on August 19 Cr. Lewis brought up the subject of tl-c Karaka cliff road, which he said was m a very bad state, and being a main road should be well maintained.— To he left to the Engineer to attend to.

Cr. Lewis also^ mentioned tlie footpath »nl dram from the Karaka hotel to the hall, nn.l said that a number of townspeople were willing to pay half the cost of making a footpath and water <able, instead of having an open drain.— Decided to get a written agreement to that effect, and bring up the Tiubject at next meeting. • «. Cr. Lewis said Mr Carlyle was planting cab/A ge i-i . c x s ! n front of the foot Path near hi« (Card es) shop, and was willing to continue he planting right clown to the Council Chamhew, on the condition that the Council made the footpath.
