CRICKET.
AX EASY WIN FOR AUSTRALIA
(Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, kwt night
The cricket match, Australia v. New Zealand, was resumed m lino weather. Sims and Midlane faced the bowling of, Whitty and Kelleway. Play opened 1 very cautiously, the batsmen taking no risks, and finding difficulty m drivingthe ball any distance along the dead turf. Five overs produced six \'uns, and' eleven overs six maidens, Whitty bowling with one man on the. on side. At 222, 21 runs having been added to Saturday's score, Sims was .smartly caught , at the wickets off Whitty. 222—5—11. Mac--farlane followed, . and the score was unaltered when Hopkins bowled Midlane.; 222—6—47. Oliff joined Maofarlane, who.' hit Whitty to leg for four run out, the ball failing to reach the boundary. Oliff" was clean bowled by Hopkins. 228—7—2. Bennett partnered Macfarl.ane, and two fours to -Mac farlane off Whitty roused enthusiasm, but Hopkins then "bowled Bennett. 236—8—0. An! hour's play had produced 35 runs. Boxs-> hall was the next man. Five were add-: ed to the score, when Macfarlalie was; easily caught by Warne m the slips off Whitty. 242—9-46. The Otago bats-i man hit four fours. Howden, the lastman, went out, and two fours by Boxshall off Hopkins caused 250 to appear. Boxshall livened up the play, but Was stumped off GorryV pads. 258 — 10 — 17. The innings closed at 12.60 o'clock, leaving the visitors 108 to make. The Australian innings began at 1.5 p. m., with Mayne and Bardsley at the wickets. j Oliff opened to r the former and Reece 5 bowled at the railway end. Mayne lift-! Ed the fourth ball over the boundary for; six. Siedeberg had a chance of running Bardsley out, but misfielded. Fif-' t^en minutes . produced 22 runs, Mayne; having hit hard for 19. • Mayne pasted; Recce, getting three fours m one over.j With the score at' 35, of which Mayne; contributed 32, Bennett replaced Oliff , ' and Howden replaced Recce. Both got better length -than the opening bowlers. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 48 for no wickets — Mayne 39, Bards, ley 6, extras 3. After luncheon, Mayne continued^ to score freely off Howden, and soon reached .60, but Bardsley found Bennett troublesome, Tttud was clean bowled without' addjlng to his score. 61 — I—6. Simpson replaced him, valid, opened freely, and 90 was quickly on the board. Macfarlahc and Haddon were tried with Uip ball. With the scoro at 99, Mayne got the- winning hit. Australia thus woii by nine \vickeis?.''Tho New Zealand bowling, with the exception of that of Bennett,, was made to look very simple by the line batting of Ml.iy/ne. Bennett, howleyer, bowled splendidly, and, while the batsmen were making runs at the rate of 100 per hour, Bennett sent down 7.5 overs for 15 rims and a wicket. It is questionable whether the New Zealand skipper was not at fault m not starting with Bennett, and, seeing that Haddon was the first bowler tried m the first innings, the fact that he was not -put on until 99 runs had been scored is apparently inexplicable..
