EXTENSION OF BREAKWATER.
THE STONE QUESTION
The members of the Gisborne Harboi Board who held a special conferencv I with Mr Marchant, C.E., yesterday I .afternoon l'egarding the supply of"stonfor the breakwater extension, proceedec round the Kaiti beach to- inspect • ; couple of sites that Mr Marchant sug gested might be tested. He explaine:. that he could hot- say whether thej would be successful m striking siiitabh stone, - but it was worth while trying. To get the stone from Pa, hill, the sup ply originally reeommehded by hin would mean funning- a tramway four teen chains round the point Avnere ii might be washed away by the sea. , Buy for that they could . not . do better thai.. get the stone from Pa. hill. Upon returning to the meeting roonr the Chairman said they wanted to de cide as to the testing' of the stone. .Be-' fore going any further with the plans oi_ the extension they should decide to put m, tlie drives because upon the supplj stone depended the success of the work. They might authorise the work being done as it. would not be--vei*y expensive. The Chairman moved that the necessary autliority ,be given to have the stont tested. If tlie stone could be got any where nearer tlian Pa hill it > would hi cheaper. ' , , - Mr Matthewson thought the tos'might be made. Mv'Xtyshar: Do you intend to m elude the, reserve at Cook's monument? The Chairman: 'We can leave that tr' v Mr Marchant. Mr Lysnar expressed the opinion thai if that portion .of the lull was tampered with it might come down. He objected to the Board meddling with tht.. reserve, but had no. objection ,to the testing of the hill near Pa hill. j.. > ! The Oliairmair: He has not raised any objection yet. ..->..' Mr Lysnar : " Capt. Tucker ought to give us something /or levelling tho tot of the hill. v . ; Capt. Tucker: And so ought the Borough Council. Continuing Capt. Tucker said he did not conceivo of anj gromid on which the Borough Council could object.' Mr Lysnar was proceeding. to explain that Mrs Carroll had given the reservt to the* Borough as a nucleus of botanical gardens when Capt. Tucker rose tr a point.. of order, stating tliat, the discussion was out, of place. Captain Tucker seconded the Chairman's motion, giving Mr Marchant an-, thority to test the two localities aftei applying to the Borough Council ano 1 other owners of the land for permission.
