MISSIGOULD'S BETROTHAL.
"SPURRING THl^ LURE OF CORONETS." ' NEW YORK, Jan 20. Unusual interest attaches to the announcement, published to-day, of the betrothal of Miss Marjorie Gould, the beautiful daughter of. Mr and Mrs George Jay Gould, to Mr Anthony J. Drexel, a member of the great banking family of Philadelphia Since her magnificent debut at New •York a year ago, wh'jn her parents are reported to have spent £10,000 on cotillon favors, the matrimonial fate of Miss Gould has been a source of constant iiixiety to the "patriotic" press, which proclaims that after twelve months spent in reviewing the most attractive unmarried princes and noblemen of . Europe, this wealthy heiress, "spurning the lure of coronets," has bet-towed her hand on tm American. The betrothal was made known at a grand I ball given at the Fifth avenue mansion of the Goulds, which was i*ecently, redecorated in the most lavish manner. Among the guests were ?Lovd and Lady Roberts Innes-Ker, Mr-George Keppel, Major 'Collins,' and Lady Evelyn Collins, Lord Aeheson, and tho leading families of New York and Philadelphia society. The scene as the cotillon began was most brilliant. Favors ih symbolical colors, indicating that the match was an American one, wera distributed, the ladies receiving Empire hand-mirrors in gilded wood frames decorated with rib bona. of the national colors, and the mon silk scarves. In the last figure gold pins and rings were preaanted to each couple, and when the dance was ended .every dancer received five costly favors. Mr Drexel is aged twenty-two, and at present is engaged lis a, clerk ut the bank founded by his grandfather. Ho is a son of Mr andi Mrs Anthony Drexel, of London aad Philadelphia.
