A deputation from the Cooks' and Waiters' Conference "waited on the Minister for Labor with a request^ for assistance m ameliorating the lot •of workers of their calling. The speakers strongly condemned the conditions under which cooks and waiters had to work. The Minister snid'tlie- hours mentioned wero, to say the least, unreasonable. He would Icemen them if he could do so. As to the condition of the workers, that ■was of supreme' importainee. . He had seen m backyards m Wellington conditions simply revolting. The matters would receive consideration by Cabinet. OAMARU, this day. The Harbor Board to-day decided to. accept the tender of J. Lothian for dredging the harbor, at a> cost of £10,833, on lines of tire scheme formulated by Mx W. H. Paterson and favorably reported on by Mr J. Blair Mason In carrying' out the work the Progress will be utilised as a stationary dredge. ..-.■' DUNEDIN, this day.
