Tho adjourned eases against two bookmakers James Hunv and Williarii Hamj, charged; with street betting, were farther investigated .to-day, • James Ham was charged on two informations with using Willis .street for bookmakihgypur poses 'on' the 27th April. Jaines Relay coal worker, gave evidence that he worked for defendant, and generally received his ' pay in "VVillis street. He had borrowed) money on occasions from defendant. Witness was not- a betting man, and had never had a bet in his life. George Wilson, fireman, employed at. the tramway power i holise,'said he knew defendant. He also ., borrowed money from him, aridihad repaid' him in Willis street, near the , Empire hotel. John Barolin, a coal worker, stated he also depended on defendant on occasions for his occupation. : ; Defendant had lent him money in ..the vicinity of the Empire hotel. Witness said not bet ' with the moneys. If witness received] work from defendant he -.was usually paid in Willis street. Mr MeGrath. intimated he had three other wharf laborers as witnesses, who had been called back to th,eir duties. Counsel urged that legitimate Teasoh had been given why defendant should have been in Willis street. Defendant was an employer of labor, and' acted on behalf of the Westport Coal Company. Counsel submitted that -the case should not be prejudiced because defendant -would 1 not be called to give evidence. Ho was of opinion that a betting card could not ;be recognised at a distance. '/His Worship intimated) that he was (not prepared 1 toy give .his decision at 'present.
