PROPOSED TRAMWAY LOAN.
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir,-r-It has been stated at many oi, the statutory meetings in favor of the proposed tramway loan that it would be better, to bring the line^down the main road into town from Makamka, but thf Bailway Department would not permit the crossing of our railway on a level with the present rails,* and it would entail an overhead bridge, -costing a, verj considerable amount. Now, iri answer to a question put by Mr Birrell, a hiember of a deputation on Friday last to the Hon. Mr McKeniiie— "C«an the Government permit a tramway line to crosp' thf railway line, at Makaraka on the rodd level to enable the said trmway. to feed the main road with the proposed Patutahi metal, and to avoid the present necessity tb. carry the, line down, the beach side of the present railway, which increases the cost of delivery of the metal Avhere required?— -the Minister replied ithat he saw no reason why the permission should not bo given. He saw no need for a liigh. level . bridge, as many tramways in the Dominion crossed railway lines. Why iUd the promoters not ascertain that there was no • difficulty in crossing the line be fpr.e having the survey made and the pfcbple misinformed on this important pdiht.^more especially as they are depending on. passenger and goods traffic for an important pa,rt of' their revenue.— -k! am* etc., il. C. PARKER.
