The Union S.S. Co.'s Talutie arrives from South early to-morrow mornings having taken up the Maheno's running, the latter steamer undergoing an overhaul at Dimediii. The Talune proceeds to Auckland, transhipping at that port Sydney, passengers to the Mokoiti, which steamer doubles back to Sydney. The Talune returns back to Gisborue on Wednesday afternoon on her way South. The Ttiatea , is timed to leave the wharf to-moVrow morning at 6 o'clock and again at 10 o'clock. The Union S.S. Cb.V Monowai arriv<G from Auckland on Sunday afternoon, and proceeds during the evening to Southern ports. On arrival at. Dunedin on Friday, May 28, she will withdraw for overhaul. The Tuatea leaves the wharf on arrival at 5 p.m. The Union S.S. Co.'s Squall returned to Auckland direct last evening with a general cargo. She is timed to leave there to-morrow for Tblaga and Gisborne, and will proceed from here to Whangarei with a shipment of sheep. The Union S.S. Co.'s Flora is duo here early from Auckland via Const ports. She is >, reported to have worked Te Araroa and Port Awanui yesterday successfully. On discharging here she sails South. , ' The auxiliai*y schooner Kaeo sailed last evening witli a general cargo for Const port* and Auckland. The Shaw, Saviil. and Albion Co.'s Tainui is expected here on June - 3rd from Wellington to loatt equal to 25,000 carcases of frozen meat. On completion of .loading, she returns South. - 3Fe.ssrs Richardson and Co.'s I|uru arrives from Napier on Monday. ' Mr Leslie Denny,, of the well-known Dumbarton firm of shipbuilder*, read an interesting paper before the Manchester Association of ' Engineers recently, on "Modern Ship Design." The general principles involved in the design of a vessel, he pointed out, were the same wliatever typo was required. . All the general features of vessels were , now tabulated by builders in a complete form and so full were the data, that it was possible to scheme out a vessel in the course of an hour which was so nearly correct that when passed to the drawing office for more careful analysis only minor alterations had to be made.
