ROADS AND BRIDGES.
WORKS IN HAWKE'S BAY. I During the past season many important works were carried out m the Hawke's Bay land district by the Road? Department (now nYcrged m the Lands Department), abouti £40,000 having been expended for the year. The following are details v of principal items, but do hot include many minor 'works m all parts of tin? district. > In the Nuhakp, district, siat miles of formation has been done on the Tokonui road, connecting tho Nuhaka, - and . Te Arai valleys. ; 'About a couple of miles of the Mangaone road is now available for cart 'traffic, and there, is a bridge over thei M&ngaone stream, access being thus given to tJie Man^apoike block.. Some eight miles has been formed of ■the- .road between Frasertbwn and Man : gapoikc valley, and about a couple of niiles ' of dray road m the Buakituri valley. Further up the samo Valley, II miles of bridle track has been felled and formed, giving access to th» Waipaoa block, recently thrown open for settlement. < . j : At the Gisborne ond of the Mangapoiko valley, tho season's work ( consisteO <»f forming seven miles of ; dr<iy road through exceedingly rough and difficult country. About nine miles nrore of the same rood remains to be done to connect with the Frasertown-Mangapoike roail-, Wlwn this is completed it will provide a more direct and shorter road than now exists between Wairoa and Gfobome. In tho Te Arai settlement, 14 miles of dray 'road hus been -formed, .a mile and a half metalled, and three truss bridges erected. .On the GwbovneWaikaremoaiifa road, a- suspension dray .bridge' of one 220 ft span was completed last week. Two other, bridges are be : Ing biiity on the same road, one 140 ft long and the other 120 ft. In the Motu.'.- .district,-, 21 miles jof bridle road, fouc miles of dray road} und a 60ft span truss dray bridge repre? sent the year's work, while m the Waitaiha block six mil-js .of bridle road and two miles <jjt di'iy rond have been completed. \ The :- : cnustriintion of a 250 ft suspension span bridge oh tho Rua-Ukuti yallev road, at the place 'known' as Boothman's crossine, is. now ; .n hand; The o-bove particulars — although, as already stated, they, only deal with the most important and omit mention of numerous ema'ller operations — •will serve to show that the officers of file late Roads --Department hay»- not been idle m Hawke's Bay> and that the roading* Which is ' necessary ' to of the outlying portions of the district is being carried, on -.with commendable tigor,— H.B., ffenild".; . *
