AUCKLAND, this day. \ At» action brought by Dr Tliomas Stuart, of Tauranga, against Dr Edward A Bewes and his wife, also of Tauranga, , for £501 damages for alleged slander, '-, has been satisfactorily settled. In an- \\ npuncing the fact at the Supreme Court j Mr Reed, for the defendants, said that , the terms of settlement required aii ex-. \ planation. The statement of claim set ( out that' the plaintiff was slandered by ] the defendants wife, .by saying, m -eU. ■] feet, that the plaintiff had been inipos- \ ing his attentions on her servant girl. , The Jattei 1 had complained to Mrs Bewes ' that she . had been followed about by Dr Stuart, who was a single man, and ] eventually began to produce- letters, { purporting to have come from Dr Stuart, asking her to make appointments with « him. The matter .became public talk. ' Ultimately the girl, when taxed, con- \ fesseel . that throughout the whole pro- "■ ccedings shb had milled Mrs 1-lewes, that Bho had never been molested by Dr Stuart, jand tliat tho letter she had produced, purporting to bo from D,r Stuart, had been written by herself.
