1^ I The Borough Council'^ Public Works Committee reported last night as follows: — "The membors of the above Com mittcc met on 7th May, 1909, when there were present : The Mayor and Crs Darton, Harris, Pettie, and Smith. "Motor 'Bus Stand. — Your Committee have to report that this question was considered, and it was agreed that for the present the motor 'bus vshould stand for hire m the centre of Gladstone road, opposite the Herald office. •'Crossing, Wainui road. — This matter, was considered, and the overseer was instructed to have the old crossing shingled at once and later on tarred. "!strcet lamps. — Your Committee went, carefully into the question of sites for additional six new street lamps, and have to report that they recommend that the lamps be erected as under : Corner Rutene road and H4naki street, corner Ballanc© street and Whitaker street, corner Albert street and Gladstone road, corner Grey street and Palmevston road, comer Rangi street and Custom House street, r corner Roebuck road and Palmerston road. "Road works (works a/fithor'iwd but not yet completed!). ; — 100 yd Waihirerespawls, say, £50; tnr footway Wainui road, started bridge- end, £120; form and shingle footway Herbert road, formed but not shingled, £25; put m 18-inch pipes across Read's Quay, from Gladstone roadi to river, (done m part), £10; form and, shingle footway Beore-s Lane (including culvert)), opposite TatAley's property, part formed but not shingled, first available shingle to be put on, £30 ; form and shingle footway Albert street, formed but} shingling not completed, £20; asphalt centre of roadway and tar sides of Gladstone rqad (including channel), work now being undertaken, £200 ; repair footway Herbert road and Russell streets, commenced; shingle Awapuni road, commenced but not finished, estimated costn £1000, say expended, £250; shingle Wj Pere street and Roebuck road bridge approaches, Roebuck road not /completed, Wi Pero street shingled, £50; total, £775. " Works authorised but not carried out. — 'Form and shingle road and footway Palmerston road (extended), opposite Parsons', £120: form and put m order Stanley road from Childers road to railway, £200; attend to water channel Disraeli street and Palmerston road, £5 j shingle Root and William streets, £130; two watering vans, £200 ; total, £655; crane grab i» be imid for, £350. "Necessary works. — The immediate works necessary to be undertaken are : Bright street formation, £25 ; Kahutia slbreefe formation, £20; Herbert road formation. £25; Ormond road formation £120 ; Whitaker street formation, £15 ; Aberdeen road formation, £68 ; Crawford road footway, say, £50; total, £325. f "That the Crawford road footway be attended to witti sand, and that a fence be erected, to keep stock off near Freezing Works' paddock gate, also that Esplanade road receive, attention,- by clearing out mud and filling with .sand. "Your Committee have to report *that the above comprise the principal works authorised arid immediate works necessary to be; undertaken." Cr Darton moved that the old works be endorsed.— Or Sbroervell contended that the report should have been circulated amongst Councillors. He moved that the matter be deferred, and that a copy of. the report fee supplied to each Councillor.— Tho motion was not seconded.—Or Clayton seconded Cr. Darton s motion, which was carried, — The report was then considered seriatim. Regarding the question of lumps., the following letters were received : — Mr H. Miller wrote on behalf of the residents m the neighborhood of Cobden street and Palmerston road crossing, requesting that a lamp be placed at the Cobden street corner, m lieu of at the corner of Grey street and Palmerston road 1 . — Twenty-three burgesses petitioned the Council to erect a gas lamp on the corner of Cook street- and Gladstone road, m lien of Albert street, as suggested by the Committee. — It was decided to com ply with the petition re erecting a lamp on tin corner of Cook street and Gladstone road, and the reft of the Committee's report -:o gas lamps was adopted. ' Mr .Tame* ■ i Mt'»*n, .manager for Messrs J. J Nivcn and Go., .wrote drawing attention to the almost impassablo condi? tiori of the Esplanade road.— M-r W. F; Cederwall, manager of the Gisborne Sheepidrmers' 'Frozen Meat Co., wrote cftlling.' 1 alien tipn- to- the road access to i't-ho works. Wit wap decided to have this work attended to.
