GISBORNE SHEEPFARMERS WORKS.
(To the Editor of tho Herald.) Sir,— Jn your sssiic of tho 10tK- Insl. I read a very interesting reiwrt under the above heading. Tho chairman of the Sheepfarmcrs' Company, m his remarks | to. your representative, says: '"The splendid service of steamers to i convey tho products to tho London < market n«v«r failed all through the wesson." Now, sir,, the steamer service thoroughly deserves all the credit that can be given to it, but my object m addressing you is to ventilate a very serious feature m the'itrade— our steamer, services are now too good, and we arc getting our meat Home too quickly j the past season having l>een an exceptionally good one, the Hbmo'iinarket is absolutely^ congested by esccsslvo arrivals on ton *of indifferent demand, resulting m an enormous loss to shippers. The remedy is storage at tlus end. We (Nelson Bros.), _m our small' way/ have large storage m proportion to our killing capacity, nnd after January m each year wb keep our stores as full* as we can, just 'lwiving , sufficient space to enable killing to be carried oh from steflmer to steamer. If every freezing company would do -tbwj- better prices at (Home Avould result, and I offer th* suggestion to your Farmers' Freezing Company th'at> . m addition to inci*easin,y their killing facilities, they should also largely increase- their storage capacity-^-that is, largely m proportion to their additional^ ; killing space. It is, of course; very /pleasant' to get our meat away; quickly and -get the money for it, but it would be much more, pleasatit to get an additional id or Id per lb for it by waiting a^ little. I fear I am trespaftsmb^ rather far on your space, but I would ,liko to poiftt out still further the evils' -of too I'ft-m'd shipping/ HawWs Bay kilHnir bni^ been nominal since the end of April; thus" m six mouths practically all our stock has been dealt "with and nearly all of it passed on- to the Home market ; and for the' next six months the quantities going forward will be inappreciable, and it Uneasy to soe thivt -selling; agents rft Home find it impossible to do justice to the consignments with such an apt palling want of uniformity m arrivals^ thus proving storage here to be the only remedy. In your , district the killing season will last somewhat longer (though not long enough)', but had greater facilities for killing existed, no doubt -.the pcaition would have been the. same as, it is m ,HaAvke*B Bay. — Yotirs, etc,, ' ' W. NELSON. Tomoana, Hawko's Bay, 18th May, 1909. FAn extract" from the agent's circular will bo jriyen luter m our commercial column. ~E/d. Herald.] <
