LIQUOR CASES.
A number of adjourned c'aaes were dealt with at the Police Court this morning, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M. v Charges. of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order were made against Richard " Solomon, James McConville, John Heaphy and Adam Knox. Referring to the former Sergt. Hiitton said accused was convicted lor a similar offence m December last, and bound over m his own recognisance m the sum of £5 to come up when called upon. There were 46 convictions against accused. When his Worship called on accused to show cause why sentence should not be passed upon him m this case, accused said he had nothing to say. Altogether the accused- was lined £10 and costs 9s, m default three months' imprisonment m the Napier gaol, .- .. . . John "Heaphy l was charged with drunkenness for a third time within six months, and -was sentenced to 14 days' hard labor 'in Napier prison. Upon the charge of procuring liquor accused was fined! £5 and costs 2s, m default §ix weeks' imprisonment m Napier prison, this sentence to commence at and from the termination of the former sentence. For a similar offence Adam Kiiox Was fined 1 £10 and costs 2s, m default three months' hard lahor m Napier prison. Robert Russell pleaded not guilty to si charge of supplying liquor to Adam Knox, a prohibited person. — Constables Dand>y v and Pratt gave evidence as to seeing the defendant supply liquor to Knox, wjiom he said he knew was a prohibited person.— Defendant contradicted tho polioe evidence, saying he had | given Knox a "nip," but had not known me was prohibited. — His Worship said ho ' was quit© satisfied accused was guill^. It was such persons as accused who rendered prohibition orders useless. When he (his Worship) had cases brought before him and proved he intended) inflicting the maximum penalty. Accused was fined £10 and co»ts 2s, m default to be recovered by distress, and m default of sufficient distress two months' imprisonment m the Napier gnol. For drunkenness •& first offender was fined Ibe* amount of his bail, £1.
