A daring robbery wa,s committed on the midnight train" on Thursday. A first-class > passenger, named Mrs James, of Wellington, "feeling drowsy, and not liking the appearance of two male passengers m the- same carriage, gathered together: her jewellery, (amount, ing m value to. about* £60), piaeed It m o, purse, and then put tho purse ;in a dress basket, strapped it up, and placed it under her feet. She then fell asleep.
When the train left Taumaruriui Mrs James awoke, and on opening the basket found that the purse had! disappeared. Wihen the train reached rßaurimu Mrs James got the railway officials to telegraph to the^Raurimu police a description of the two persons, who had since disappeared, r Constable Maher arrested two men* named Wm. A-rinnine,-. alias/Harris, and Thomns Fanning early this morning, and on searching them; found the missing jewellery. . , ;. The prisoners appeared) before the local Justices, and "were remanded for a week.
