EDUCATION BOARD.
CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT
(Special to Herald.)
NAPIER, this day. The Education Board met yesterday. The Oliairrrutn, in his monthly statc-Ti-ent, said no reply had been received to the Board's application for a grant for a school .-it Te Puia., and for a residence at Frasert-Qwn. No tender had vet been accepted for Mohaka, the ques:.ion of the extension r>f the school site being still unsettled. Appointments: Miss ' H. Hogg, assistant at- Gisborne. Tlio Makdraka school having during the month become entitled to an additional issistant, I deemed it advisable that Miss Lange should remain on the staff, and gave,- instructions to temporarily fill -he assistantship at Patutahi.
CONDOLENCE. Before proceeding Avith the business, bho Chairman .said that in his opinion the Board had suffered ->a great loss in the unfortunate death of the late Mr Clavkson, director of technical education. He had always found him a zealous and earnest officer, and tlie great progress made in technical work in Napier was duo to his personal interest. He wouid move that, a vote of condolence be forwarded to the relatives of^deceased. This was seconded, by Mr ■Shrimpton, and carried, all standing. TECHNICAL SCHOOL CONTRACT. The architect, Mr W. P. Finch, submitted'a report on the technical school, in which he specified certain minor de fects, which he said the contractor was willing to rectify at liis own cost. The most serious defect, the architect pointed out, was in the bench tops of tho laboratory, for 'which jarrah had been used. These were entirely unsuitable, and would need to be replaced. On the .motion of Mr McLemon, seconded by the 'Rev." Mr Grant, it was decided : "That the defects in the technical school building, as pointed 91st in the report of the Board's sub-committee, be. corrected free of expense. by the contractor, and to the "satisfaction ,'of 'the Chairman arid architect. Further, that tho architect give a written explanation us to why he. permitted' defective and inferior material to be used in the building." . .-. ■ ; - ' INSPECTORS' REPORTS, f
The matter of partitions, applied for by Gisbonje and Mangapapa^ was held' over for further information. • SOHOOL CORRESPONDENCE.

OTHER -NUTTERS.
The settlers of Kanakanaia. applied for a school, stating that 15 children were 6f school age, and the nearest school was 8£ miles away. To be informed that the Board would supply a teacher if the settlers would provide a room, and that enquiries could be. made as td school site. ' F. Piper, a Wairouite, was granted £6 capitation on- a household 'school. The Tolaga. Bay Committee applied for a grant towards c'onveying children to school.— Granted. Y
- Messrs Darton and. Morgan were appointed to enquire into the question of providing instruction for children? numbering, about AO, at the ".railway cohstruction works, Gisborne. Mr Dartpn's motion, providing for setting, nsidef a yearly sum for rebuilding, the Board's schools, was carried.
