N. Brodrick, District Surveyor and local Land Officer, Gisborne, will be heartily endorsed by all who haVe come m contact with this able and courteous official, who, during his brief sojourn m Gisborne, has earned' the esteem of many. <Mr Brodrick joined the - service as a qualified surveyor m Canterbury 32 years ago tliis month. Three years prior to that (1874) he was a cadet on a station property with the now Hon*. J. F. Richardson. Mr Brodrick has spent a lengthy portion of his time m the Canterbury district, which he practically traversed from om end to tlio other, rendering some most useful service m connection with glacial ■• work on the Southern Alps. He has also been, engaged m ■ Otago and , Marlborough, having been sent to take charge, of fhe celebrated Flaxbourno case. With head, quarters at Timaru, Mr Brodrick held the position of assistant surveyor and district land! officer, together with the charge of the Roads Department of South j Canterbury. From this offioe he "Was! trans'erred; io Gisborne m , July, .^- 1.906'. : The appointment of Mr Brodrick to Commissioner for OroWn, Lands arid ..] Chief Surveyor for 'Hawke's Bay will entail his removal to Napier, and a I change m the membership of« the Tai* Rawhiti Maori Land Board. Mr George H. Bullard, District Surveyor of > Taranaki, who has ■■ been ap-' Jiointed 'to.take Mr Brodrick's .place, pined the Civil Service m 1879 at Neltebri^*;where he remained until 1690, teheSb.' hb was promoted and transferred tb Taranaki. He is a man of about 49 years ".of age. As the senior Commissioner of Crown, liands- arid Chief Survey ot of the Domitiion, ilflf length of service and m every other "Way, the appointment of Mr J. StrauchOn to the office of SurveyorGeneral was fully anticipated throughout the service! Mr Strauchon. has ably held the Commissionership of Lands for Westland, Taranaki, Wellington, ,and is at present m that office at Auckland-i In the earlier days he was.. District .Surveyor m Otago. , ; Mr Eric 0. Gbld-Siriith, .who advaiices from the Commissioner of Lands and Chief Surveyor at Canterbury to Auck: land, was many years ago District Surveyor at Tauranga-. bubseqiiently he came to Gisborne, and' after being stationed here for some years, was promoted, to the Cbmmissionership of Lands for Hawke's Bay, recently being transferred! to Canterbury. The appointment of Mr E. H. Wilmot to the Commissionership of Crown Land^i at Dunedin indicates that Mr D. Barron, the present officer, and brother of Mr A. Barron, Chairman of the Land Purchase Beard, is also being retired-. Tlie new Secretary for Customs, Mr IV Carter, was stutioned m Napier for ■many years, afterwards being transferred to Dunpdiri as landing surveyor, thence to Wellirigtdn to the same, position, and afterwards to Nelson as cpllector of Costonlß. Mr Carter is not exactly the senior m this branch of the service, being superseded by Mr J. Mills, brother 'of Sir James Mills, collector at Auckland, who however, «uf-. fers indifferent health. Joining the service m August 1865, it appears that Mr Carter can hold tho secretaryship for but a- yoar, if it is intended to continue the enforcement of the ago limit. A The retiring Land) Purchase Officer, Mr A. Barron ,lvas been a public servant since 1861,- the year of liis arrival m New Zealand. He served under the Provincial Government of Otago, and on the abolition of the*. provinces, was selected as the first , assistant m the* organisation of , the General Survey Department. Since then ho has had gharge of the head office, the Under-Secrctiuy-ahip of Cri>wn Lands, Mr' Edw-ard! John Von Dadeltswn the publisher of the Official Year Bf>ok, i^ a well-known figure m the New Zealand Civil Service.' 1 As -a young riian he was associated with Mjr " (now Sii) John Gorst), Chief Commissioner for the Waikato, where, under Sir George Grey's direction, the thin end of the wedge of civilisation was firmly planted, but through the action of the natives the schoine was to an abrupt con: elusion.-- Subkquentjy Mr Von, Dadelszen joined the postal 'service, and^ cn-i tfercd the Itegistiar-General's offico m 1864. \
