' '» . NARROW ESCAPE O'F HOTEL OCOU'PANTS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A lire early yesterday morning burned Mi© Paekakariki hotel to the ground. Che lessee i« Mr Hilton. The hotel wat built over 30 years ago, and was- a stopping place for the coaches which used to run between Wellington and Wanganui before the railway was completed.. It jontaiine'd about 35 rooms, and. was ownsd by Mr G. Ajiyon, now 'residing in Fiji. No cause can be ascertained for tho outbreak, which w«« discovered by the laundress about 5 o'clock in the morning. The housemaid immediately iroused the 31 boarders, who escaped in their night clotliing, absolutely nothing being saved. The licensee got away with nothing ;but his coat and) trousers. So sudden and fierce were the flames that a quarter of an hour after the alarm the building wa« |n ruins: Mr Hilton lost £80 worth of jewellery, and several of the boarders lost valuables to a. smaller amount. The building was insured in bh© LiverpooD, London and Globe office for £2100. and the furniture for £200, and' the stock for £200 in tl\© same office. '"."''
