They opened very poorly, the first three wickets falling for the small number of .4 runs. Howden and ¥oung commenced bowling , for the local men, and their deliveries were dealt with very carefully. The forrAer bowled three consecutive maiden overs. Taylor joined Mills, but ruris still came slowly, and then the partnership was split up by Pine clean bowling Mills for 8; 4 for 21. Hobson then went in and commenced to hit the bowlers, Pine- arid Reynolds, who had come on, all over the field, but the score was not increased when the fifth wicket went down. Murdock was tlie next nian, and he played a very pretty. innings. . His partnership was a good one, and ;the score Was .rapidly improved, but Hobson was eventually: disposed of by Reynolds for 19 ; 6 for 53. Brown followed and Harker took Pine's place, and soon after Howden again came on, relieving Reynolds. The batsmen knocked the bowling about . , mercilessly, but Howden had his third ball returned to him by Brown; 7 for 61. Buckley was then partnered by Bucklarid, and the latter did some strong . hitting. He was riot allowed to remain very long, as Howderi ' found his slumps after he had made 11; 9 for 96.
