SHORTAGE OF PETROL.

CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The shortage of petrol continues,; but it seems that the position will be improved very shortly. The local agents of the Colonial Oil Company have eceived the following cable from their head office : "The shortage of petroleum have given us great concern ( -fo r . several months. We have spent .£2OOO transhipping supplies from Australia. : to New Zealand without, having raised the. prices. Thirty thousand cases of petrol for New ■ Zealand' were shut but .of steamers loading m New York. ' We have arranged for large supplies to be shipped from. Sydney by the Olive Branch, which was unfortunately delayed by strike.? there for a month. This vessel (which arrived m Auckland yesterday) is due to-day with 22,500 cases of naptha and benzine." The Colonial Oil Company lias met with considerable difficulty of . late m arranging for the carriage of petrol and other spirits from New York to Australia, owing to the shipping conipanies being unwilling to take goods of this description except as deck cargo.
