Mr Carter's bacon factory at Whakatane was destroyed by fire last week. The building and plant, valued at £2000, were insured for £1300 with the New Zealand office, and the stock, valued at £5300, was uninsured. Recently several cases of typhoid fever occurred at a boarding establishment m Brisbane. Tho premises were scrupulously clean, and tho proprietor was completely puzzled to account for the out- ! break. The drains having been declared I to be m a sanitary condition, attention j was turned to the. milk, 12 quarts of which were found upon examination to icontain 110 less than six quarts of im- | pure water. The dairykeeper, an honest vendor, was as deeply concerned as the proprietor, and caused the boy carter to pc watched. Then the mystery was unravelled. The boy had been disposing of the pure milk, and making up his shortage with water quite unfit for human consumption. . Advices received at Auckland from Samoa state that the s.s. Sonoma is timed to leave San Francisco on February 11 for Honolulu, Pagopago, Auckland, and Sydney. This coincides with a statement published m the Star some time ago to the effect that m the event of an increased subsidy being voted by Con*, gress to the Spreckds Line, tho steamers Sonoma, Ventura, and Sierra would again take up the mail line between 'Frisco and Australia, commencing from February next. At the opening of Con gress, President Roosevelt spoke m favor of the subsidy, but up to the present the bill has not been introduced.
