Whilst baUiing a horse' ia the surf on -the Waikanae beach opposite the abattoirs at 10 ; o clock this morning Mr Bert Davy liad, the unpleasant experience of comino. acixiss ; the body of a dead man. When dragged ashore it was found the man, who was middle-agedi and well-dressed in a cheefc'suit, had his hands folded across his chest, and his Panama hat placed in his" hip pocket. There was a wound on the iback of bjs head, from whiclu blood ' was flowing, and Hs eyes and lips appeared to ■have been nipped at by fish. When discovered the body wa& quite limp, and did not seem to have been in the Avater long. When searched at the morgue the only articles, found to give any clue as to the man's identity Av-ere a bit of blue paper. with "John Owens, Enfield L roady Napieir" Avritten in ink on it. There was also found in another pocKet a small key with a pixpeiice attached. These were (tlie only articles found. Judging "by, the short time the man appeared to have been dead, it is thougiht that hemust have fallen off the s.s/. Waikare, which passed through Gisborne yesterday. The body has not been identified.
