NOW MORENGA DIED.
RIDDLED WITH BULLETS AFTER TWO HOURS' FIGHT. UPINGTON, Sept. 23. The Hottentot rebel chief, Morenga, was killed by Major Elliott's force after a long chase. and a hot fight. Morenga, with ten Hottentots, gave the troopers the slip on the German frontier. The troopers discovered the spoors, whereupon Major • Elliott, with sixty men, pursued him dyer a waterless tract of country for forty-eight hours, at. the end of which he found Morenga holding a position on a kopje. Morenga opened fire at a thousand yards,' arid fought for two hours. '."'.... Inspector Manders. wkh twelve troopers, finally rushed the' kopje under coyer of the main body's^fire.' Corporal Henwood was killed at ten yards' distance, and the man who shot him was immediately killed by one of the corporal's com. rades. When the troopers captured the kopje they found Morenga riddled with bullets. A German officer accompanied the column, and was under fire during the attack. He loudly praises the column's achievement, particularly the concluding charge.
