THE MELBOURNE CUP.

MELBOURNE, November 5. No finer day for the running of the .MelbourheyCup has been known in the history of the race than that experienced to-day,; nor has a greater crOwd been seen at Fiemington. Yesterday afternoon's steady rain; which engendered doubts, as to the state of the running, backed up the rumor about Mountain King being a non-starter. However, the weather conditions only served to settle the dust on. the course, and make the going even better. Early r this morning the sun shone out brightly, being tempered by a cool southerly breeze, and these genial conditions being unaltered throughout the dgy, drew the ladies to Fleimington; in all their finery, and' the local* followers-*, of the sport were reinforced by such crowds from othei" States as had never previously; heen seen. No doubt the anti-gambling, laws also aided in swelling tlie attendance, especially, oh the hill and flat, for, as on previous days, thousands who could not now back their fancies in town flocked to the course. Ante-post betting on the race had neyer been quieter, and threats of prosecution deterred the press from giving more than a faint outline of the ■state of the market. Still, it was a very ha-ppy crowd, and to international visitors it must have conveyed a world-wide advertisement of Australian prosperity. Every part* 'of the course was crowded, and fashionable hats, gowns, and parasols made up a _ picture which probably could not be equalled ih; the world. Bettuig ori the course was never sor brisk. Apologue's victory was not the only one to fall to^a'New Zealand horse during tlie afternoon, Seddon, the three-year-old full brother of!' 'Wairiki, who was bred at Glenora Park, Auckland, winning the Yan .Yean Stakes in a field of thirteen.
