It is a rare coincidence for a mare to give birth to twins. That distinction, however, has been secured by Mr Norman Walker's 13-year-old mare Daisy, which this morning dropped two fully matured foals by Marshal Soult. One unfortunately did not survive. At the Police Court this morning, two young men, first offenders, for drunkenr ness. were convicted and fined ss, costs 2s, m default 24 hours' imprisonment. ! An elderly man, named Wm. The monotony of a sea voyage k was broken for the crew of the auxiliary <s*chooner Kereru when on her way .to Tairua last Thursday week. , When off Te Kaha, states Captain Brinck, they saw three Maori boats harpoon a whale. The whale, enraged by the sting of the spike, set off, and towed the three boats nine or ten miles out to sea. The captain then placed his vessel at the captors' disposal and took them and their prize m tow, back to Te Kaha. The whale was about 40 feet long. The anniversary services m connection with St. Andrew's Church were successfully conducted by the Rev. Wm. Grant yesterday. During the offertories the choir rendered anthems, which were greatly appreciated. The first instalment of contributions towards the new church fund was made and resulted m £435 being subscribed, a result which altogether eclipsed the anticipations of most of the office-bearers. In addition to this private contributions have been received, and the total amount at present m hand is about £500. In addition over £1000 has been promised. An accident which resulted somewhat seriously occurred at the Whataupoko bridge this morning. It appears that as Mr W. Sievwright was driving into town a horseman, who was met on the*, broad part of the bridge, tried to pass. The hon-e, on which a man named Louis Charles Graham, from Waimata, was riding, became skittis-h and being on the wrong sdde backed on to Mr Sievwright'* horse. Although Mr Sievwright, who was driving straight ahead, pulled up, an accident was unavoidable. The rider and horse were knocked over and Graham got amongst the horses' feet, where he was either trampled on or kicked. When his floundering horse was got clear the unfort unate man was found to be unconscious, and was immediately conveyed to Dr Schumacher's surgery and thence to the hospital. Upon examination it was ascertained that he had received a bad scalp wound, but there was no fracture. Mr Sievwright escaped without any injury or breakages. At 4 o'clock this afternoon Mr Graham was still unconscious, and his condition is considered to be rather serious. As a result of a spar between two men m Peel, street: on Saturday afternoon, Charles Ryan was this morning charged at the Police Court with using threatening behavior m a public place. Accused said he pleaded guilty under great provocation. G. Oman and H. N. Lysnar gave evidence of what took place. Mr Oman said lie saw the accused dismount from his horse and invite another man to fight. They had a few words and commenced to spar. He could not say whether the •other man tried to avoid the conflict. Mr Lysnar said an angry altercation took place. Accused told some man to hold up his hands, at the same time using filthy language. The other man did not seem desirous to fight, but only defended himself. Accused, who gave evidence on his own 'behalf, 'said he was riding home, when he was called back by a man named Willcot. Another man was there, and • asked accused who was going** to pay for a drink. Accused said it didn't , matter to him who paid. Tlie man then used filthy language, which provoked accused, who jumped off his horse and saidi he would thump the man for calling him such names. His Worship said that would not justify accused for fighting m a public place. Sergeant Williams said the accused had been m the district a few weeks, aud had been a considerable nuisance. He was an undesirable character. Accused, was convicted and fined £1 , costs 2s, m default four days' hard labor.
