(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. It appears that legally not more than three totaiisator machines can be used m connection with any race meeting, but this law* has been repeatedly broken, "both by the Ajuickland and Avondale Racing Clubs, the irripression being that as only one dividend was declared, there was no breach of the law. In the Police Court to-day the Avondale Jockey Club and ite secretary, H. Hayr, were separatelycharged with using three machines m excess of tho law at each day of the last race meeting. The offence was adriiitted, but as very- short notice had been given, the Magistrate did not impose any penalty beyond payment of costs. HAMILTON, this day. The entries for the Waikato show on November 8 and 9 total 1400, as compared with 928 last year. NAPIER, this day. A sharp double shock of earthquake occurred at 12.17 a.m* on Sunday. WELLINGTON, this day. Tho work of reconditioning the damaged flax cargo of the s.s. Turaltina is being carried out with all possible expedition. A temporary plant for the purpose has been erected at Miramar at a cost of some £1400. It is expected the flax will not be ready for re-shipping before six or seven weeks' time. Some of the^lax has i been found to be m a very badly prepared condition. • Six petitions m bankruptcy were filed m Wellington during the quarter ended September 30th, as compared with 17 during tho previous three months and 10 during the September quarter of 1906. CHRISTCHURCH, this day A ten-roomed house m Rolleston street, Linwood, owned and occupied by Mr J. C. Cameron, foreman of the City Council staff, was partially destroyed by fire on Saturday evening. The fire originated m a workshop, and before water could be procured it had gutted the rear portion •of the house. On Saturday evening a fire occurred m Roileston street, Linwood, at the sixroomed two-storey house of Mr J. C. Cameron. There was some delay m giving the alarm, and when the engines arrived the firt had a strong hold. The water supply was such that -the- first engine worked, from a tank m Worcester street, and it sent the water on to another engine 1500 yards away. The latter sent it on to the fire. The back portion of the house and a i>ortion of the roof were destroyed. The fire broke Out again m the same house at 11 o'clock, and the outbreak was subdued. The house was insured m the Atlas Office for £800, and the furniture, all saved, for £300.' The damage is estimated at £400. HOKITIKA, this day. A public meeting at Ross resolved to make the strongest possible protest to the Government at the delay m completion of the bridges contract for the Ross railway. 'It is pointed out tliat the contract was let two years ago', and there was still no timber at the site of the Titari river bridge. General indignation is expressed at the long-drawn-out delay. DUNEDIN, this day. Archdeacon Gould, of Oamaru, has been appointed vicar of St. Paul's Cathedral, m succession to Archdeacon Robinson. Obituary : Mr J. A. Kirby, a prominent mason and bowler; and William Wright, grocer, a former member of the Harbor Board and Hospital Trustees. The Rev. R. F. Williams, Methodist minister at St. Kilda, announced from the pulpit yesterday that he was leaving the work of the ministry, being -no longer able to conscientiously . affirm the standards of faith of the Church.
