ARBITRATION COURT.

■» CONVICTIONS AND FIXES. (From our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Attorney-General presented to the Legislative Council yesterday a return showing that m 1904-5 a total of 203 employers were convicted of breaches of the Arbitration Court awards, 44 cases being I dismissed and 10 withdrawn. A sum of £514 10s was inflicted m fines. For the year 1905-6 the figures were : 167 employers convicted of breaches, 20 easel dismissed, 14 withdrawn, £570 imposed m fines. For 1906-7 the totals were : 258 employers convicted, 29 cases dismissed, 8 withdrawn, £1025 15s imposed m fines. In regard to charges againsi workers under the Arbitration Act, the return showed that m 1904-5 29 workers were convicted of breaches, 8 cases wer< dismissed, aridi one was withdrawn ; £15 was inflicted m fines. In 1905-6- 46 workers were convicted, 11 cases were dismissed, and five were withdrawn, the amount inflicted m fines being £22. Last year 101 workers were convicted,, nine cases' were dismissed, and one was withdi'awin, the fines imposed totalling £60 2s 6d. The foregoing figures do not include cases taken by (unions'; as the information supplied to the Department is incomplete. The return also gives particulars relating to the slaughtermen's strike; m the northern district 46 slaughtermen were fined, all charges brought being successful. In . Wellington, where 121 informations were laid, all cases failed because the agreement had not been properly executed; while m Canterbury 226 men. "were prosecuted, one case was dismissed, : and 221 were fined, foaia* cases being struck out altogether. In Canterbury 273 in-, formations were laid, but 47 men left the district, and could not be found. The total fines imposed amounted to £1335,, and of this sum. only £485 19s has been recovered. ■ ■■> The return was asked for by the Hon. J. T. Paul. . ;
