VITAL STATISTICS.

A RECORD BIRTH LIST,

The vital statistics published yesterday form a record for Gisborne as far as the births are concerned. The number oi births registered for the month was 54, and for the quarter 120. Of course, these numbers do not necessarily represent the months or quarter for which they are set down ; they are the actual number registered, and as 62 days' grace is allowed for registration the numbers might not correspond closely, but for the purposes of average m regard to the births there is not likely to ne any great variation, as the same system runs right through, and what a term would lose m one 1 respect it would probably gain m another. This does not apply to deaths, however, as it is known only too well that some months claim more victims than others— that can be proved by the law of averages. Enquiry made m regard to the births shows that the Registrar (Mr H. E. Hill) was kept busier last month than m any previous month m his experience. As' many as eight births were registered m a day. The total would have been increased by at least two, the particulars m these cases being incomplete- The record month, it might be mentioned, included a registration by the deputy himself of his first child, a daughter. The marriage* are well up to the average, but unhappily the number of fatalities, especially of young children, has been large. Thr number for the month is set down at seven, Jbut as a matter of fact it would be made double if all the registrations were complete. There are m hand eight forms which have not yet been completed sufficiently for registration. These will perhaps give the present month a worse character than it deserves, for the increased sunshine should help materially to improve the health of the community.
