REMARKABLE FIRE.

TOP OF A TELEGRAPH PO^E. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Shortly after 11 -o'clock a fire broke out in the most remaxkable of places, the top of a telegraph pole, at the corner of Gloucester street and Oxford Terrace. The cause .of the fire is obscure, but flames broke out fiercely in- one of the distributing boxes by which the wires in the metallic current cables are shut up. Among telephone subscribers the first effect was \tp set air telephones on, that section ringing. Crowds soon gathered and water was pumped on top of the pole from the; adjoining building, but it made so little progress in quelling the outbreak that a. chemical engine had to be. sent from' the fire station to extinguish the flames. The fire seems to have been caused by a house that .Was being shifted coming in contact with the teleplione cables ; at any rate, the fire in the box practically coincided with the incident. '■;.■■-■ .News also reached the fire station that similar fires occurred on poles in Victoria stre'etj and other, parts of the city, and the general belief is that the moving of tlie house caused a cbntact Avith the tramway cables, and so <on extensive fusion occurred, affecting all sections radiating from the point of contact. All the fires were extinguished, no serious damage being done. . ; '...;■
