In the Federal Parliament Mr Reid opened; the debate on the tariff, made a general attack on the Government proposals, and said- people had been invited by him tp>leaye the -tariff, as Tit. was, but refused to endorse; his policy, and by a two to one majority pledged members to increase the tariff. It' was a monstrous absurdity to ask these members to go against their pledges, but at the same time he did not think people m their maddest moments expected instalments of prptection sit'ch as?werelii6w prpppsed.
