THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

.-tAINING OPERATIONS.

r'erhaps a merrier trio cannot be found in New South Wales to-day (says the Sydney Telegraph of July 20) thaiTthe holder of the world's sculling championship, Charlie Towns; his brother George {who recently resigned the title); and genial "Billy Fogwell, all of whom are quartered right royally at. Host Montgomery's Palace hotel atMortlake. A visit to the training quarters of the champion elicited the fact that he is in good condition, and doing all that his trainers ask of him. He rows well in his work •on the river, does a lot of land exercise, and as a result has an appetite not easily satisfied'. . That the double sculler built* by George Towns for use by himself and Fogwell in providing pace for the champion is serving her purpose is easily proved by the fact that no steamer on the river can hold the two men when they are going in the 'rigger. The Towns party are communicative and make no secret of their anxiety to retain the championship for a New South Wales sculler.

On the other hand, there is a reticence about the ...movements of the New Zea : lander, Webb. He certainly was ori the river on Thursday afternoon, but did nothing whereby an impression of his true form could be gained. He is doing a lot of work in Abbotsford Bay, but at odd times ; aiid is thus a hard customer to get at with the binoculars. However, those who have had the pleasure of seeing him putting in a "solid half-dozen" are assured that Charlie Towns had not the easiest task in the world to beat the New Zealander.
