Preparations are being made for ail important scientific expedition to tha Southern islands (says the LytteltoA Times). It is probable that nearly all branches of science in New Zealand .willbe represented in the expedition, which will be taken to the islands by ofie of the Government steamers. As far as is known at present, the expedition will leave the Bluff at: the etid of October or the beginning of The expedi* tiott will be divided into two parties. One -party will go to the Auckland Islands, and the other to Campbell Island, ten days being spent on the former and six on the latter.; Tlie trip will occupy altogether about three weeks. The Government is making the arrangements at the suggestion of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury.
