THE INCUBATED CHICK.
I'm not a little Orphan, sjr, But I'm jiist as sad; A-peakin' and a-peakjn' fpr The love I never had. One touch of sympathy Would melt my poultry natur'; But I refrain from hope so vain, For ma's an incubator.
When first I burst my parent shell, How hideous the dream — No rich "Cluck, cluck"— fond love d d tell No sound, alas, but— s^airi.' I felt m vain for sheltering wings Within that broilin' eraser. And then, m sooth, the horrid truth — Ma was an iriepbator!'
Sometimes . ai rosy fingered dawn I stand m pensive mood, As now and then! some kind sweet hen y. Walks proudly with her brood ! Dear influences of the home ! .And I,' a woman hater, Stand all apart with! withered heart— For ma's an incubator. —May Bowman, Merriam Park, Minn.
