LITTLE POEMS, GuAVE Ai\D GA'. CANADA^DREAM. When the white frost lies on the topmost rail Which fences the fold whore- the sheep are fed ; When the steins of the purple fire-weed fail, And the bracken losing its russet red. Takes the livid hue of the clouds o'evhead; When fear of the Ghost from the white North grows In the sullen pines where the wolves are bred. Iri gold and crimson the maple glows. When under, the stars, on an uuseen trail, The hosts of the clamorous fowl have 1 sped; When the old folk die and the young jolk ail, . , , And the homing cattle, by instinct led, j . Come wandering down to the rancher' 3 1 stead; .".When the hearts of men are oppressed by dread. ■:■ In gold and m crimson the maple glows. When the rainstorms thresh with pitliess flail, *•■ '■fii--The last faint flowers m the garden bed, And the sloops drive home Under short- ! ened sail; When the songs are over and songbirds dead. ■"'•■'• And the last farewell of the antuim :> said, Whilst a bleak world shudders because it knows That the feet of its dying are round its dead, In gold and m crimson the maple glows.
