Fairclough chair-man-of district. The mediation of Messrs T. H. Davey and Geo. Witty, M's.H.R.y m connection with the slaughtermen's dispute, has proved ineffective. The Union accepted their offer to do what they coiildj- but explained that they had quite lost faith m the Arbitration Court, and would have nothing to do with it. A copy of the proposed., new log was given to Messrs Davey and Witty for the purpose of .conferring .with the two companies. A conference was held this morning, but the managers of tlie companies absolutely refused to discuss the matter except on the Arbitration Count basis. Messrs Davey and Witty reported to that effect at a special meeting of the Union held tonight, and they were warmly thanked and cheered for their services. 'The Union affirmed the position tliat it would not take less than 25s per 100, and while it was willing to enter into im industrial agreement with the companies, it would have notliing to do wiUi the Arbitration Court. At a largely attended meeting of the General Slaughterers' Union to-night a motion was adopted expressing sympathy with the slaughtermen . m their present trouble. DUNEDIN, last night. Enquiries have been held into the stranding recently of the coastal steamers Rimu and Rakuira. Mr O. W. Chamberlain, Collector of Customs, conducted the investigations m the case of the Rimu, and forwarded the evidence to Wellington. The Rakuira enquiry was held before Mr G. Cruiekshank, S.M., and two assessors, Captain Beaumont and Captain Pattersou. The taking of the evidence lasted nearly all day, and after an hour's retirement, Mr Cruiekshank announced the judgment of the Court. The captain. certificate \vs«s ordered to be suspended for six months, though a certificate of lower grade may be issued to him m the meantime. Tlie mate's certificate was returned to liiin, but he was ordered to pay £5 5s costs, half the cost of the enquiry. INVERCARGILL. last night. A peculiar case of mistaken identity has been creating considerable interest here lately. C. Otway was convicted recently of riding a bicycle on the footpath.' Otway, supported to a certain extent by twoothenT swore that the offender was his brother, but on a policeman's evidence. Mr McCarthy. S.M.. convicted him. A" rehearing was granted, and the magistrate's decision reversed.
