THE SWETTENHAM INCIDENT.
(Press Aesn.— By Telegraph. — Copyrig'fct.) LONDON, March 5. Mr Churchill has announced that Sir A. J. "Swettenliam has resigned the Governorship of Jamaica on the grounds of age. He was given the opportunity of continuing to hold "office, but definitely declined.
Kingston newspapers printed soon after th c earthquake contained explanations of Governor Swettenham's letter to Admiral Davis. Recording .. to the newspaper 6tories, Eugene Magnus, proprietor of J. E. Crosswell and Co.. had asked for British troops to help him -recover hiS c safe, ■which was buried m the ruins of Kis store. He was told to go elsewhere for help. Soon after the arrival of the American marines they helped Mr Magnus m his search for his valuables. Wnile the marines were at work Governor Swetten? ham passed on horseback, and. addressing Mr Magnus, said : "Do you know that those men helping you are American marines!" "Yes, thank God!" replied Mr Magnus; "and. l wish there were more of them." This remark, which angered the Governor, is said to have prompted him to write-to Admiral Davis.
