(Per Frees Association.) OHRISTOHURCH, last night. The cricket mntcli, Canterbury v. Murylebone Club, commenced at Lancaster Pmk yesterday afternoon, when the weather was fine and the ground completely recovered from the previous night's rain. De Trafford captained the Englishmen and won the toss, sending his opponents into the field. The batting was very disappointing. Before the tea adjournment seven wickets Mere down for 80 runs. Afterwards Fox and May were soon got rid of, but Curwen and ' Tufnell made a fine stand for the last . wicket, taking the score from 104 to 200, ( when Curwen was bowled for a fine inning 6 of 76. Tufnell, not out, had hit 37, the last 95 runs having taken 32 minutes to make. Callaway and Bennett bowled well until the last men were together, when all the trundlers hit freely. The fielding was good all round. Canterbury, with 40 minutes batting, by careful play, scored 35 for no wickets at the call of time. England (first innings)— R.
