NEOLITHIC FOOD SUPPLY.
SIR F. TREVES ON DANGER TO
PUBLIC HEALTH
Some startling statements about the dangers m connection with the food supply of civilised man were made by Sir Frederick Treves, who presided at a meeting held at University College under the auspices of the National Health Society, to discuss the purity of the meat and milk supply. Sir Frederick Treves declared thai while the public was over-squeamish it did not seem to mind anything that it did not see, and inasmuch as the bacillus of typhoid fever wm not as large as a tadpole, the public aid not seem to mind swallowing it m millions. "You may. remember that there have been certain revelations with regard to tinned meat," he said. "They . revealed the fact that m these tins were found the sweepings of floors, miscellaneous dirt, portions of rat, and, according to one story, portions of man. "But the meat was cooked and was free from all germs, for it is perfectly safe to assume "that both the rat and the man were healthy, and any objection is consequently due to over-squeamish-ness, because those who raise a protest against such treatment do not object to swallow any amount of bacteria of disease without any question. As a matter of fact they swallow a camel and strain at a gnat.
